Music Industry Launches Global Deals To Combat Internet Piracy

The global music industry will today announce a new licensing system for the distribution of music on the internet – the latest effort to develop legitimate online services.

Under the new structure, internet service providers will be able to negotiate multi-territory licensing agreements with the music industry rather than face negotiations in each country where they provide webcast music services.

The deal – negotiated by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) – follows a rapid rise in unauthorised file-sharing over the web. In the first half of the year, illegal downloading contributed to a 10.9 per cent decline in recorded music sales to $12.7bn (EU-11bn, £7.6bn). [more @ www.ft.com]
