MTV Video Music Awards return to New York

MTV’s Video Music Awards will return to their intimate New York roots this summer. The 23rd annual edition of the event will take place August 31 at the 6,000-capacity Radio City Music Hall and will air live on the music cable network.

Bands From Around The World Flocking To SXSW

The South By Southwest Music Festival is so big, and there’s so much music, that it’s hard to tell what’s an official SXSW show and what’s not. Some say it doesn’t really matter.

Shows and parties are popping up all over town and will continue through Sunday. The Austin Convention Center was packed with bands from all over the world registering for the festival on Wednesday.

In two decades, the festival has grown from 200 bands and 700 people registering to a staggering 1,400 bands and more than 8,000 registrants.

4.6m reasons why 150 minutes is too long

So, just 4.6m viewers for the Brit Awards – and a strange echo of last week’s Grammy Awards, which secured figures of 15.1m in the US, compared to the 28.3m achieved for the American Idol final.

In contrast to the UK’s premier music awards show, X Factor gathered 9.2m, Strictly Come Dancing 10.4m. But both of these shows were Saturday night shows, and can barely be compared to the Brits.

Grammy gets hip to rap music

It’s difficult to imagine the Grammy awards committee weighing the merits of Missy Elliott’s “Lose Control” against those of 50 Cent’s “Candy Shop.”Somehow the thought of stuffy Recording Academy members doesn’t mesh with chrome rims, blue cognac and scantily clad video vixens.

But it’s reality. Now more than ever, the influence of rap music and its mainstream ambassadors reaches past the pop charts and into pop culture. In 2005, Reebok launched its “I Am What I Am” sneaker campaign featuring 50 Cent and Jay-Z alongside major athletes. Increasingly, rappers such as Queen Latifah, L.L. Cool J and Ice Cube star in major motion pictures; and last November, Vanity Fair unveiled its first ever hip-hop issue.

Irish Album of the Year, Shortlist Announced Today

The shortlist has been selected by a panel consisting of 12 media professionals representing Irish print, radio and TV from the four corners of the island.

Kaiser Chiefs lead Brit Award nominations

Leeds rockers the Kaiser Chiefs and former British army captain James Blunt have followed their explosion on to the music scene with five nominations each at the Brit Awards.

Blunt is up for British male solo artist, album of year, pop act, breakthrough act and British single, marking a resurgence for singer-songwriters.

Leeds five-piece Kaiser Chiefs are nominated for British group, album, live act, rock act and British breakthrough act.
