Sales of music compilations dropped sharply in 2005, as consumers are increasingly opting to make their own DIY mixes using digital technology, according to new figures.
In its yearly report, UK record companies’ trade association the BPI said that the UK music industry has been buoyed by a late Christmas sales boom, a rapidly expanding digital market and a growing appetite for homegrown talent.
Sales of artist albums increased 1.4% on 2004, marking a record year, representing 126.2 million units. Meanwhile, annual single-track purchases rose 48%.
Although established compilation brands such as Now! and Clubland World / UMTV sustained strong sales throughout 2005, the compilation market dipped by 15.7% in 2005.
